Everyone in the Great Cheng capital knows that the new Commander of the Imperial Guard, Wei Qingluan, is a cold-blooded butcher who kills without blinking. But no one knows that this “young powerbroker” is actually a woman in disguise and a double agent. A marriage granted by a twist of fate binds her to Jing Rongde, a fake princess. One thinks the other is impotent, making him the perfect shield. The other thinks the first is on death’s doorstep, making her the perfect protection. Then, during their face-off, the “princess’s” collar is ripped open, revealing a clear Adam’s apple, while the commander’s clothes fall away, exposing her snow-white chest binder “You’re a woman?!” “You’re… a prince?!” On the night their disguises are exposed, she learns he is a direct descendant of the Great Cheng royal line, the heir the Empress Dowager raised to be her puppet. He learns she is a rose with thorns. They are no false dragon and fake phoenix, but a member of the Jing royal house reclaiming the throne and a daughter of the Wei family who will take charge of the covert intelligence bureau for him. The Empress Dowager’s scheme to control the heir falls apart over that cup of tea shared by the two of them.
