In 1925, in Liling, Hunan, the Yang family’s eldest son, Yang Liren (played by Huang Zhizhong), is a schoolteacher with a perceptive mind and a gift for strategy. Their only daughter, Yang Lihua (played by Zhang Heng), has been educated since childhood and is independent and strong-minded, a representative of the New Woman. Their youngest son, Yang Liqing (played by Sun Honglei), is mischievous and rebellious by nature, but brave and upright.
Influenced by revolutionary ideas, Liren initially joins the Kuomintang, then becomes an instructor at the Whampoa Military Academy. By chance, Liqing also enters the academy at this time and meets the family of Qu En (played by Sun Chun), a Communist political instructor there. Liqing sees Qu En as a spiritual mentor, and also falls in love with Qu En’s younger sister, Qu Xia (played by Ke Lan). As relations between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party continue to shift, the three siblings’ lives are turned upside down, and Liqing and Liren become bitter enemies. In those turbulent times, what will become of their blood ties, revolutionary ideals, and pure love? The Road We Have Taken won numerous awards, including First Prize at the 28th China TV Flying Apsaras Awards, the 15th Asian Television Awards, and the Golden Award for Best TV Series at the 16th Shanghai Television Festival.
