On the day the college entrance exams ended, the one person she never expected to stand her up did exactly that.
Qiao Nian waited from daylight until dark.
Liang Ye never came, and she couldn’t get through to him by phone.
Before that, he had never made her wait more than five minutes.
They had never been cut from the same cloth.
Qiao Nian trusted grades and standard answers, while Liang Ye cared only about whether something could actually work.
The first time they met, her bicycle broke down outside the county vocational school.
Liang Ye got it rideable in three minutes, but then squatted beside it and told her:
“Being able to ride it and having it properly fixed aren’t the same thing.”
Later, a cross-school project forced them to work together.
At first, neither of them would give an inch.
But even after the project ended, they kept seeing each other.
There were no competitions, no assignments, and sometimes not even a particular reason they had to meet.
Qiao Nian thought there were some things they no longer needed to ask about.
Until the summer they had promised to go see the sea together, and Liang Ye failed to show up for the first time.
Many years later, they met again.
Only then did Qiao Nian realize she might never have truly known the answer back then.
