The Day My Betrothal Was Broken, I Married a Poor Man

When Lin Qiuyue was nineteen, her fiancé, Li Jianjun, broke off their engagement in front of the whole village at their betrothal banquet.

His reason was that he had passed the county civil service exam and was now too good for a country girl.

Lin Qiuyue stood on the stage as hundreds of people watched. Not one of them spoke up for her.

Her father crouched in a corner, smoking his pipe. Her mother wiped away tears. Her younger brother clenched his fists but didn't dare say a word.

Just when she thought her life was over, Lu Qingshan, the poorest man at the edge of the village, came over.

He was twenty-seven, his parents had died young, and he lived in two ramshackle mud-brick houses. Everyone in the village called him "Wooden Head."

He stood before Lin Qiuyue and said one thing:

"Marry me. I don't mind."

Lin Qiuyue gritted her teeth and went with him.

She thought she had married a good-for-nothing, but this man farmed by day and studied by night, silently treating her like a queen.

Later, Li Jianjun, the man who had broken off their engagement, knelt outside her home and cried like a dog.
