This story follows a young man from Sichuan through his transformation from student to soldier. After family upheaval leaves him with no choice but to take to the hills, he eventually becomes a soldier. He lives through the warlord conflicts in Sichuan, takes part in the civil war, and later leaves Sichuan to fight bravely against the Japanese invaders.
