In the autumn of 1974, Qingshigou suffered its third consecutive year of poor harvests.

To save a bowl of gruel, the Lin family, who favored boys over girls, abandoned their one-year-old daughter, Xiaomanman, deep in the mountains to fend for herself, then told everyone she had died in infancy.

Fortunately, the child wasn't eaten by wild animals. Instead, Gu Changshan, a wounded veteran, found her and brought her home.

Gu Changshan was lame, fierce-looking, and so poor he had only half a sack of coarse grain. The villagers all laughed that he had picked up a child so the two of them could wait to die together.

But no one could have imagined that this abandoned baby, who had nearly died, was born with the gift of bringing good fortune!

When she went up the mountain with her daddy, squirrels lined up to drop plump hazelnuts at their feet. When they came across an injured fawn, it didn't run away. Instead, it led them to a vast grove of rare wild fruit!

Even more astonishing, any wild vegetables or medicinal herbs that Xiaomanman watered or tended with her own hands had an incredibly high survival rate and grew beautifully!

Faced with the mountain's astonishing bounty, Gu Changshan reported it to the village team and helped the whole village set up drying stations for mountain produce, fruit-tree nurseries, and experimental plots for forest-grown medicinal herbs.

The villagers who once kept their distance from him now competed to bring Xiaomanman eggs and sew her floral padded jackets.

Qingshigou, once so poor you could hear the wind whistle through its pockets, transformed under the father and daughter's leadership. They enclosed the barren hills, built workshops, and paved a road to prosperity leading to the county seat.

As the Gu family's fortunes flourished and the whole village prospered along with them, the Lin family, who had abandoned the child, grew mad with jealousy and regret. They came by again and again, hoping to claim her as family and get a share of the money.

But all they found was the village chief's ironclad rules, the villagers' cold stares, and Gu Changshan's unwavering determination to protect his own.
