The Engagement Ends, Love Is Laid to Rest

On their third wedding anniversary, Wu Xiao prepared a table full of dinner and waited until late into the night.

Leng Hua came through the door reeking of alcohol. A cufflink that wasn’t hers slipped from his coat pocket.

Their three-year marriage had begun as a union of convenience, and endless cold treatment had defined it ever since. Every time she tried to reach out, he ignored her. Every hurt she suffered was casually brushed aside.

That night, Wu Xiao didn’t cry or make a scene. She calmly handed him the divorce papers.

“Leng Hua, I don’t want to drag this marriage out anymore.”

He scoffed, assuming she was throwing a tantrum, and brushed off her request to sign.

It wasn’t until she moved out of the villa without a second thought, leaving the platinum fountain pen from their engagement on the empty bedside table, that he began to understand. Then he opened the documents Gu Yan had given him and saw every hardship and hurt she had borne alone over the past three years.

At last, Leng Hua panicked.

He abandoned every shred of pride and desperately tried to win her back, foiling the schemes of those with ulterior motives and even going against his entire family.

But she only shook her head gently. “The hurt really happened. I can let go of my resentment, but I can’t go back to you.”

Once some love has been spent, it can never be brought back.

And some people are destined to spend the rest of their lives paying for the coldness they once showed.
