After He Was Reborn, He Begged Me on His Knees Not to Marry

Shen Jibai was going to marry Lu Zhiyao. The news spread throughout the capital. Everyone in the residence waited for Wen Wanyue to cry, but she did nothing. She simply burned the letters the two of them had exchanged, one by one, and poured the ashes into the lotus pond in the courtyard. Not even a splash broke the surface. Three years earlier, she had rescued a young man at the Hanshan villa. They fell in love through letters and agreed that he would come to formally propose the following spring. But when Lu Zhiyao arrived with the half of her jade pendant she had lost, claiming they were betrothed, he believed her. Wen Wanyue didn't defend herself or fight for him. She only said she was willing to marry. Shen Jibai thought she had accepted her fate. He even planned to take her as his secondary wife after Lu Zhiyao entered the household, figuring it was a fair arrangement. Then, on the wedding day, he sent someone to fetch the bride. The messenger returned with a report: the eldest daughter of the Wen family was not the second daughter of the Lu family. And the bride he was supposed to marry had already climbed into the sedan chair of Jun Yan, the Grand Secretary of the Court of Judicial Review. * Jun Yan was Shen Jibai's sworn enemy of ten years at court. He was ruthless and cold, never went near women, and was rumored to prefer men. Wen Wanyue mistook him for someone else when they met to discuss marriage, but he went along with the misunderstanding and had the marriage certificate prepared that very night. Only later did Shen Jibai learn that the person who had rescued him at the Hanshan villa all those years ago had always been Wen Wanyue. He searched for her frantically and knelt outside her residence, begging her to reconsider. From behind the door, Wen Wanyue gave him only one reply: “Lord Shen, you can't change the name in the family register back now.”
