Synopsis

The test shoot’s discarded footage was four seconds longer.

Everyone in the frame held the same poses they had at the end of filming. No one moved.

I counted three times. There were six people every time. But only five people had been there that day.

On the hard drive my mother left behind, there was an empty folder with a four-character name: Do Not Fast-Forward. In the recycle bin was a deleted video, four minutes and twenty-five seconds long, which couldn’t be recovered.

Our production crew went to a city frozen in time: 2,300 empty homes, seven caves carved into the mountains, a loudspeaker system still broadcasting, and an old man who had kept watch for thirty years.

Every evening at five thirty, he turned on the broadcast and called out the same name. For thirty years, no one had answered.

On the night of the livestream, 870,000 people answered for him.

We followed every rule. Don’t look back. Don’t answer when your name is called. Leave as soon as the broadcast ends.

The trouble always comes from the rule no one told us about.

New Books Only! The More Underrated, the Better!

Any new book will do. I’m open to anything, especially books that haven’t gotten much attention. It’s hard being a new author, so let’s not leave them writing to an empty room, okay?
