After Getting a Death Email, I Hunt Down the Calamity Before It Strikes

At 12:17 a.m., cold-chain claims adjuster Zhang Haige receives a death email from seventy-two hours in the future.

The email says that Hengyuan Cold Storage will be sealed in three days, killing fifty-seven people. The last victim will be the recipient herself.

She rushes to the cold storage facility and, while reporting spoiled frozen meat, discovers the body of its manager, Zhang Bao, and fifty-seven sealed black rescue bags. Stranger still, the facility's temperature-control system is treating a mass of black tissue that devours heat as ordinary cargo and keeping it in storage.

Zhang Haige doesn't wait for disaster to strike. She starts up a meat grinder and destroys the disaster core before it can mature.

The core is damaged, but the cold storage facility seals shut on the spot. Warehouse heir Chen Junhao gains the power to control supplies and temperature, at the cost of requiring the other survivors to keep providing him with heat. Zhang Haige refuses to accept a system that demands "sacrificing a few to save the many." Drawing on her cold-chain expertise, fire and rescue skills, and the cooperation of ordinary people, she saves forty-eight lives from the death toll for the first time.

After that, future emails keep arriving: a flooded subway, White Tower Hospital, an acid-rain lockdown, seven cities without power, a countdown for the whole city...

Each email places a disaster in her hands seventy-two hours before it happens.

She gradually discovers that the emails come from an underground relay station where her mother, Yu Hongfeng, is based. The Tianheng Project, launched fifteen years ago, is creating disaster cores. Its director, Yin Guowei, plans to use seven arks to select survivors and hand the entire city over to a System that calculates nothing but efficiency.
