In the third year after Chen Yan graduated, the dilapidated old apartment he rented was slated for demolition, he was laid off, and he had just 320 yuan in his account.

One rainy night, he found a silver-gray, long-haired cat freezing in the stairwell. With the last of his money, he bought cat food and fever medicine.

The next morning, he woke up pinned down and struggling to breathe. A girl wearing his T-shirt was in bed with him, silver-haired and cat-eyed, baring her teeth at him. "Who said you could touch my tail?"

The girl called herself Xue. She said she owed him her life, so she had decided to stay "temporarily" to repay him. But her idea of repayment was to hog his bed, empty his fridge, use his keyboard as a scratching post, and demand two yellow croakers a day without a hint of shame.

Chen Yan wanted her gone. But she could understand every cat in the city, and the reports they brought her were faster than the police: where the missing child downstairs was, who had switched the old lady next door's blood pressure medication, and whose pocket the landlord's demolition compensation had gone into.

On the day the first payment came through, Xue crouched on the windowsill, licking her paw as her tail swished back and forth. "This kitty isn't helping you. The canned food here is just better than the stuff outside."

Chen Yan saw the tips of her ears turn red and pushed his last yellow croaker toward her.
