The whole building knows that someone with a death wish moved into Unit 402.
The old apartment only costs 800 yuan a month, and something happened to all four previous tenants. The agent’s hand trembled as he passed her the keys. “Don’t open the door at night.”
Someone knocked on her door that very first night. At 1:03 a.m., three knocks, a pause, then three more. A voice like breaking glass called her name. Every previous tenant who had opened the door went mad.
She opened it and found no one there. “Oh,” she said, then went downstairs to buy toothpaste. When she got back, she decided the hallway was dirty and mopped the floor. The thing hiding in the cracks in the walls was so scared it shrank back inside.
When the lights flickered, she said they needed fixing. When a face stared at her through the window, she said hi. At the end of the hallway, a black cat with golden eyes was crouching. She squatted down, gave it a couple of rubs, and claimed it as hers. “You’re with me from now on.” The cat felt unnaturally light, but she didn’t think much of it.
The whole building waited for her to crack. Instead, she tamed the most vicious thing there and kept it as a cat. By day, it basked in the sun outside her door. At night, it watched her through a crack in the ceiling. Later, it learned to pick locks and even sat at her desk, tapping away at the keyboard. It tried desperately to learn how to be human, while she spent every day worrying about its toothpaste flavor and what to name it.
Until one day, the door to Unit 401 next door opened.
