In 1992, the supply and marketing system carried out mass layoffs.

Zhao Yuanfang was sent off to the supply station in Maping Township, the poorest place in the county. There were no roads for a hundred miles in any direction, and the mountain villagers used salt as currency.

On his first day, an old abacus fell from a warehouse shelf and hit him on the back of the head. When he woke up, a line of text appeared in his mind whenever he looked at anything.

The black wood the villagers used for kindling? Agarwood, worth an estimated 800,000 yuan.

The washing board belonging to an old woman in the Miao village? A Chengni inkstone from the Ming dynasty, worth an estimated two million yuan.

The stone by a hunter’s wall? A rough jadeite with vivid green, icy translucence.

From then on, what others saw as junk was pure gold to him.

He traded a box of instant noodles for five kilos of gastrodia, then sold it for 30,000 yuan.

He traded a pack of cigarettes for a “worthless rock.” Once cut open, it revealed vivid green jadeite, and jewelers from the provincial capital scrambled to buy it.

Boss Ma had monopolized the mountain region’s supply network for more than a decade. In three months, Zhao pried the whole thing away from him.

Someone asked him how he did it.

Zhao Yuanfang patted the hunting rifle on his shoulder and smiled. “I’ve got a good eye, and good aim.”
