Shadow War: From the White Mountains and Black Waters to the Lone Island Chessmaster

Hit director Shen Huai dies suddenly and unexpectedly wakes up as Wen Shuan, a lowly cannon-fodder clerk in the Shanghai office of the Military Statistics Bureau in 1940.

With no money or connections, all he has is a strange glow in his chest that warns him of danger:

Light gray means hostility, medium gray means surveillance, dark gray means conspiracy, and solid black means... a dead end.

Stuck with the reputation of a spineless good-for-nothing who got ahead through connections and is afraid of everything, Wen Shuan quietly pours tea and runs errands, caught between the Special Higher Police, the Wang Jingwei regime's 76th Office, and the Military Statistics Bureau.

Some risk their lives with blades at their throats, chasing spectacular assassinations. Wen Shuan, meanwhile, stays in the shadows, using his knack for short-form drama to orchestrate one elaborate scheme after another, making others do his dirty work.

The best warriors leave no legendary feats behind; the best players need no flashy moves to win the whole game.

When the enemy's ranks crumble silently from within, they realize only at the moment of death that the unassuming clerk who spends all day slacking off and sucking up to his superiors is the mastermind controlling life and death across Shanghai.

Wen Shuan: “I'm just a nobody with powerful backing. None of you need to pay me any mind.”
