He Kisses the Light in the Abyss

Back to the summer of 1996.

Four-year-old Shen Nian pushed open the dust-covered wooden door.

In the shadowy corner inside sat a boy whose legs had been amputated and who could barely hear even the wind.

Everyone called him a monster no one wanted. Only Shen Nian stood on tiptoe, leaned close to his ear, and shouted, “Big brother, don’t be afraid. I’ll be your ears!”

Years later, they were seventeen.

Shen Nian had become the most dazzling, radiant girl in the high school, the unattainable girl everyone admired.

Zhou Mo hid himself beneath the hood of a gray sweatshirt and smashed his hearing aids in a rage. His face cold, he warned her, “Stop worrying about me. I’ll only drag you down.”

Shen Nian didn’t leave. She crouched on the dusty floor, picked up the pieces of his hearing aids one by one, glued them back together with superglue, and set them outside his door.

He thought that if she stayed in the abyss long enough, she would eventually turn around and leave on her own.

But she took his hand and smiled sweetly at him. “Unless the whole world goes silent, I’ll never let go of you.”
