(The rating just came in; it’ll rise later) [Frontier life, reclaiming land and farming, pocket dimension, exile, infrastructure building, two strong leads, devoted husband, protective and indulgent romance]
Jiang Sui, a powerhouse from the apocalypse, transmigrates into the body of a criminal’s daughter-in-law. An official document exiles her to the frontier, where she’s married off to the gravely wounded deputy general Lu Chen to bring him good luck.
On their wedding night, her mother-in-law gives her a divorce letter and the family’s last few coins. “Chen won’t make it through the night. We don’t want to drag you down. Take the money and leave at dawn.”
Jiang Sui glances at the man lying unconscious with a raging fever, then at the shabby house with nothing in it and the two children, gaunt from hunger. She folds the divorce letter and puts it back in her mother-in-law’s hands. “I’m not leaving.”
Leave? Outside, corpses litter the roads and refugees are everywhere. As a disgraced, orphaned girl, she wouldn’t last three days out there.
If she stays, at least she’ll have a sensible mother-in-law, well-behaved younger siblings, and a husband who can fight and do hard labor, even if he can’t get out of bed right now.
More importantly, her apocalyptic pocket-dimension ability came with her. Though it’s shrunk to a mere one cubic meter.
Ironware? Stash it. Seeds? Stash them. Grain? Stash it.
Exile to the frontier means a dead end? Jiang Sui smiles. “It means the emperor is a long way away.”
The military camp gives them a broken-down horse cart and ten pounds of coarse grain, then sends them off to take up their new post at Heifeng Pass, five hundred miles away.
Everyone thinks this family of the old, the weak, and the injured is doomed, but Jiang Sui leads her mother-in-law, a teenage boy, and her gravely wounded husband through the blizzard and carves out a path to survival.
She trades felt boots for silver, hunts wild game in the barren hills, stocks grain in her pocket dimension, and reclaims wasteland for farming at Heifeng Pass.
Little by little.
The woman sent into exile builds a city at Heifeng Pass.
Her limping husband recovers, and becomes the God of War who strikes fear across the northwest.
