The Incense Seeker: The Blind Shopkeeper Feels the Pain of the World

My name is Yu Jin, and I'm an immortal.

More precisely, I'm an unfortunate immortal who was banished to the mortal realm.

Eight hundred years ago, I committed a terrible crime. My memories were erased, and I was cast into the cycle of reincarnation. Misfortune clung to me for more than twenty years, and both people and ghosts despised me.

With nowhere else to turn, I stumbled into a pawnshop called Divine Incense Guide.

The shopkeeper was a blind young gentleman named Su Muzhe. Gentle as jade and serene as water, he could sense the memories sealed within objects by touching them.

He took my memories, lifted my bad luck, and let me stay on as a shop assistant.

From then on, we took on one strange, ghostly tale and human obsession after another:

The misplaced love hidden in a bloodstained wedding dress, the cries of countless souls imprisoned in a silent bell tower, the frozen obsession with a fallen kingdom inside an upside-down golden palace...

Every case returned a fragment of my memory to me.

Every object cost him a little more of his own existence.

I thought he was just an ordinary shopkeeper.

It wasn't until that day that I learned the truth:

The person who stole the heavenly fire for me eight hundred years ago, and was blinded by the flames and burned out of the cycle of reincarnation, was him.

And he had waited for me for eight hundred whole years.

"Shopkeeper, what exactly does your pawnshop take?"

"The heaviest things in the mortal world."

"What could be so heavy?"

He tilted his head slightly. Beneath the white silk, the faintest hint of a smile appeared.

"A person's name. It took eight hundred years of waiting before he finally came to pawn it."
