The 1970s: The Cool Female Educated Youth Leaves After One Night

Su Wanqing, the aloof, high-minded medical genius from the family compound in the capital, is sent by an official transfer order to join a remote production brigade called Red Star.

On her first day in the countryside, a torrential storm blocks the mountain roads and her ox cart overturns into a ditch. In a ruined cave dwelling, she meets He Ye, the brigade's fiercest, wildest, and most fearsome rough-and-tumble captain.

In that storm-lashed cave, she takes the brigade's most savage, untamed captain for herself.

Thunder rolls over the mountain ridge, and one night of reckless passion follows.

At daybreak, she fastens her collar, leaves behind half a jin of nationally issued ration coupons, and walks away without a trace.

By day, she is the frosty village doctor at the commune clinic, unsmiling and incisive, saving lives with silver needles and stopping bleeding in surgery. She is cold as ice to any man who tries to court her;

by night, she can't stop thinking of that scorching, hard chest, and her fingertips tremble.

Like a starving wolf abandoned by its mate, He Ye clutches the half-jin of national ration coupons she left behind and searches every village within ten li.

Then, at a commune meeting, the newly arrived female youth representative steps up to speak.

He Ye sits below, staring fixedly at that cool, chaste face, his back teeth nearly grinding to dust.

After the meeting, in an empty cornfield, He Ye pins the lofty Doctor Su against a haystack, his voice hoarse and fierce:

“Doctor Su, you think half a jin of ration coupons is enough to get rid of me? Am I really worth that little to you, He Ye?”
