A brain hemorrhage sends Chen Mo, the “Pioneer God of War” of Tengyun Group, to the gates of death. In his dream, he sees his family ruined after his death, while the stock options he spent more than a decade earning go up in smoke.
When he wakes, 35-year-old Chen Mo is a changed man. He gives up his senior position at the company and changes his name to Gu Changfeng, hiding away in the retirement department. His only KPI is to clock out promptly at 5:30 p.m., go home to cook for his child, and take a walk with his parents.
But he only wants to lie flat, and his abilities won’t let him.
Just to get off work early, he casually tweaks two parameters, bringing back to life a company project that’s been stalled for three years and stunning the industry. The whole company cries out, “Engineer Gu has been in seclusion for eight years and has mastered the ultimate art!”
At a company retreat, he’s forced to make a speech. His cynical line, “The boss dreams of trading up to a Ferrari, while you dream of making rent,” is hailed by the entire staff as a “sage teaching from the godfather” of resistance to capital. The chairman excitedly grasps his hand. “Changfeng, you’re using reverse psychological manipulation to help me weed out disloyal employees!”
Gu Changfeng is fed up with the harassment from his nominal boss and the schemes of his competitors.
“Mr. Zhao, I got tired of this routine ten years ago. Don’t keep me from picking up my kid.”
“What? Emergency overtime? My dad’s waiting in line for a doctor. No matter how urgent it is, it can wait until I’ve registered him.”
He has no idea that while he’s waiting in line at the hospital and casually advising his rookie apprentice over the phone, he’s stirring up a storm on Wall Street.
Everyone is convinced that the legendary “Tengyun God of War” is plotting a grand scheme to turn the world upside down.
Gu Changfeng (lighting a cigarette, his face weathered): “I really... just want to get off work on time!”
