I Only Wanted to Take Up My Fief, So Why Are You Forcing Me to Become Emperor?

In the Great Yan Dynasty, the Second Prince, Xiao Jin, falls from favor in the palace intrigues and is banished to the bitterly cold frontier of Yunyang to serve as a mere seventh-rank county magistrate.

The Northern Rong raid south every year. The provincial authorities obstruct him at every turn. The people are impoverished, the weapons are falling apart, and everywhere he looks is a disaster waiting to be dealt with.

The powerful Liu faction at court watches him like a hawk, while the Crown Prince looks on coldly. No one takes this fallen prince seriously. They see him as nothing more than a pawn they can discard at any moment.

But Xiao Jin refuses to accept his fate.

Armed with agricultural and industrial knowledge from a later age, he begins rebuilding the frontier. He promotes high-yield potatoes and wheat, digs canals, and reclaims farmland. He provides work to support the displaced, opens mines, smelts iron, and builds workshops, then trains a formidable local militia ready to fight and win.

He repels the Northern Rong cavalry, ambushing them at Heishikou and sending them fleeing in disarray. At home, he takes on corrupt officials, deftly countering their tricks with tax controls, grain seizures, and impeachment, then turns the provincial authorities' dirty tricks right back on them.

He secretly makes composite bows and develops thunderclap bombs, keeping his new weapons hidden until the time is right.

He allies with the border troops and opens up trade routes, until the little county town gradually becomes a jewel of the frontier.

The Crown Prince extends an olive branch, hoping to bring him under his control. The faction loyal to the Liu family repeatedly tries to kill him. Xiao Jin navigates between the two powers, joining neither and relying on neither, while quietly laying ever deeper foundations.

Then the heir apparent raises an army in rebellion, plunging the realm into chaos and bringing down the court.

Only then do people realize that the distant little city of Yunyang has long been hiding elite troops and provisions enough to decide the fate of the realm.

Xiao Jin leads ten thousand frontier troops south. Their iron hooves shatter the clouds over the capital. He crushes the rebels and restores order to the court, rising step by step from a seventh-rank county magistrate banished to the frontier to the throne itself.

The winds of the frontier eventually blow into the imperial palace. The discarded pawn ultimately takes the throne.
