Living at the Bottom of the River

[Period setting + devoted husband + rugged man + everyday family life] On the very night Lin Ru got married, her husband ran off with another woman, leaving her behind in the Wen household to be mistreated and ordered around by his harsh eldest sister, Wen Jinlan. Day after day, she did the dirtiest, hardest work, and the slightest mistake earned her scolding and ridicule. Everyone in the village saw her as a disgraced woman who had broken the rules. Only Jiang Chen, who had grown up alone and destitute, protected her at every turn. Jiang Chen was hard and taciturn, keeping to himself at the sheepfold on the western slope. He kept strangers at arm’s length, but showed nothing but tenderness and affection to the timid, gentle Lin Ru. Her third uncle and aunt, along with her second elder sister Wen Jinxiu, who had returned to the village to serve as a local official, saw how the two felt about each other and quietly helped them along. But the domineering, old-fashioned Wen Jinlan and her slick brother-in-law Wang Guihu watched them at every turn. Along with Wu Xiaojing, who loved to stir up trouble, they plotted in secret, hoping to catch the pair in a compromising situation and ruin Lin Ru’s reputation. A secret moonlit rendezvous on an icy road on a snowy night. A tender moment by the wall in the dead of night, nearly discovered. On one side stood the worldly rules and judgment of others; on the other, the man who would protect her at any cost. Lin Ru was caught between a rock and a hard place. She feared Wen Jinlan would cause a scene and bring trouble to her elderly grandmother, yet she couldn’t let go of Jiang Chen’s steadfast love and protection. A farcical marriage in name only. A love that defied rumors and stood firm. A long-suffering young wife and the tough man who cherished only her joined forces to face the village’s gossip and the cruelty of bad people, breaking free of their shackles step by step and finding an honorable, secure marriage.
