The Day Zhaodi Broke Her Leg, the Day Her Family Fell Apart

[Period setting + elder care + ensemble cast + the ugliness of human nature] On the loess hillside in Xiaoyuan Village, ninety-year-old Zhaodi curled up on the earthen kang like a withered tree. Her name bore the mark of a bygone age, and she had endured more than her share of hardship: she lost her father as a child, kept the household going as a young woman, and raised six children. Her eldest son, Jinsuo, died young; her second son, Yinsuo, became henpecked. Only her four daughters remained to take turns caring for her. On her eightieth birthday, she moved out of her eldest son's home and began rotating between the households of her four daughters: Dacui, Ercui, Sancui, and Sicui. Then, at her second daughter's home, Ercui's, she fell and broke her leg, shattering the peace once and for all. Her bedridden days became a mirror that revealed the schemes hidden beneath her children's masks of filial devotion: who had done more, who had received less of the family property, who should pay more of the medical bills... The affection they had once shared as family wore away amid endless daily arguments. The turmoil over her care dragged the family into an endless cycle of infighting. Only when Zhaodi took her final breath and the loess covered her coffin did this farce, rife with schemes and resentment, finally end. All that remained were fragments of family affection scattered across the ground, drifting silently away on the wind of northern Shaanxi.
