A Century of Creases, a Boy from the Frozen Earth

Three days after the Winter Solstice in 1961, in Diaolan Village, western Hunan. A baby boy was born on a snowy night, with a natural crack in his forehead. His grandfather dabbed it with gold powder from the Daoguang era. “Mend the crack with gold.”

His name was Yanzhou.

At five, he waited for his father to return from the hydrology station. His father gave him a white pebble and said he didn’t know how long it would be before he came back.

At seven, his father was forced to kneel on the bluestone slabs, and a white bird flew toward Moon Pass. He was gone for seven years.

In the pebbles on his mother’s doorstep, Yanzhou learned what it meant to wait. From the steelyard his sister handed him, he learned how to weigh things. When Chen Mingyuan said, “Take the Peking University entrance exam,” his mother was stunned for a moment. “Then we’ll have to pack a few more changes of clothes.”

In 1978, the admission letter arrived. His father came back from Zaoguo Bay, his hair white but his back straight.

Yanzhou took the last pebble his mother gave him and boarded the train. Outside the window, Diaolan Village grew smaller and smaller.

More than eighty years later, a centenarian Yanzhou returned to his homeland in clothes woven from memories. His grandfather’s words still rang in his ears: “Living with a crack makes you stronger than if you’d never been cracked at all.”
