Bureau 749: Section Seven, Season Two

Season Two of The 749 Bureau: Seventh Division arrives with a bang! The Seventh Division of the 749 Bureau is the ultimate fail-safe unit, called in to handle grudge-fueled hauntings so devastating that the first six divisions have been wiped out and local authorities are completely helpless. Its special case team has four members: Lu Yuan, an outer disciple of Longhu Mountain who specializes in combat and warding off evil; Shen Bai, a professor of folklore who communicates with spirits and questions the dead; Jiang Wan, a spirit-artificer from western Hunan who specializes in formations and equipment; and Lin Nian, a recent graduate who scouts through dreams. Since making their name in the first volume with “Summoning Spirits at the Haunted School,” they have become the paranormal world's last line of defense. The second installment starts with a case involving the Miao frontier's Gu King, then draws the team into a thousand-year-old city beneath the East China Sea and its final words, a desert spirit child whose name is eternally remembered, an undertaker's seven-day delayed farewell, an ICU doctor's posthumous rounds, and historical names altered and erased... The newly added fifth member, the “Spirit Child,” begins as someone saved by others and grows into a savior, carrying a name remembered for a thousand years. Each volume presents a standalone case, while emotional clues build steadily from one case to the next, with satisfying moments, tearjerkers, and story anchors all carefully placed. The stories are stranger, the pace tighter, and the exploration of human nature deeper. Lu Yuan learns to protect people without relying on thunder. Shen Bai's notebook fills with promises kept. Jiang Wan uses science to interpret thousand-year-old witchcraft. In her dreams, Lin Nian draws portraits of those who have been forgotten. The second installment is not a retread, but a complete evolution: from suppressing grudges, to speaking with obsessions, to taking up the guardians' torch. Remembering them is how we protect the world of the living.
