Climbing the Palace Ranks: From Eastern Palace Cook to Empress

Lu Mingyue, a lone girl burdened with a criminal status, is sent to the Eastern Palace as a child. Starting as a kitchen drudge amid smoke and flames, she becomes the wet nurse to the young Crown Prince Xiao Heng through a twist of fate. The imperial palace is cold, and everyone looks out for themselves. While everyone else abandons the fallen prince, she alone stays by his side, enduring years of hardship. After the late emperor passes away, the childless Lu Mingyue is sent to a royal temple to shave her head and become a nun, as required by custom. For three years she keeps vigil beside the oil lamp, quietly gathering loyal followers and befriending extraordinary people, while honing her political savvy and broadening her perspective amid hardship. When the new emperor Xiao Heng takes power, he defies the opposition of the court's great clans and the empress dowager to bring her back to the palace. The empress, born into a military family, humiliates her at every turn, while a favored consort secretly spreads slander and frames her. Lu Mingyue patiently bides her time and lays her plans, then turns the tables, deposing the overbearing empress and taking sole control of the inner palace. She does not rely on romance to climb the ladder. Instead, she uses the emperor's trust to enter the court, promotes talented men from humble families against all convention, and gradually dismantles the great clans that have dominated the Great Yu for a century. Together with Xiao Heng, she ushers in a new era of dual rule. They have relied on each other through hardship since childhood, and their lifelong devotion runs deep. Yet, trapped within the cage of imperial power, they cannot love each other without reservation, leaving them with regrets and no say in their own fate. After the emperor dies of illness, she quells a rebellion within the imperial clan and purges the remaining enemies at court. Breaking through a thousand years of convention, she rises from a lowly palace maid to the highest throne, becoming the founding empress. Her lifelong restraint and vengeance finally reach their conclusion. This is both a tale of the cruel fate of the inner palace and noble households, and a triumphant rise to claim a vast empire.
