Even Thieves Have Their Code: I’m No King of Thieves

I’m from the Rongmen. Put plainly, I’m a thief. Back in those days, thieves were everywhere. There were all kinds of ways to steal: pickpocketing, using tweezers, grabbing, slashing, and reaching into pockets... To me, those were all kindergarten-level tricks. Even thieves have principles. I have a moral code. I don’t steal from elderly widows or widowers, orphans, or people with disabilities. I don’t steal from down-and-out travelers, chaste and virtuous young women, women about to give birth, or patients’ life-saving money.
