Our Little One Is Three and a Half: Dad, Let's Bring the Heroes Home

[Adorable little girl] [spirit-sensing] [tearjerker] [fallen heroes] [episodic] [father and daughter] [uplifting] [the whole internet in tears] [based on true events] [dad raising a child] During the Qingming Festival tomb-sweeping, my three-year-old daughter pointed at the Martyrs' Memorial and said, “Daddy, there are lots of uncles in military uniforms watching us.” I thought it was just a child's imagination, until she named a narcotics officer who had died in the line of duty three years earlier, and even knew every detail of his mother's secret. “Brother Zhou Zheng says he hasn't been home in three years. His mother cried herself blind, but she's still waiting for him.” That was when I realized my daughter could see the spirits of fallen heroes. From then on, one hero who could not rest in peace after another came looking for her... A flood-control martyr wanted to hold the wedding he never got to have with his fiancée. A peacekeeping martyr wanted to watch the flag-raising ceremony one more time. A firefighter martyr wanted to tell his mother to stop keeping his bedroom door shut... Everyone thought I was a fraud, until a live broadcast by the state media let hundreds of millions of people witness Nian Nian take one spirit after another by the hand and help them complete their final journey home. A reporter asked her, “Nian Nian, why do you help them?” The little girl turned around and smiled. “Because heroes shouldn't get lost.”
