In a year of severe drought, three-and-a-half-year-old Jiang Niannian got separated from the group fleeing famine.

The tiny little girl crouched by the roadside, so hungry her stomach was touching her back, when a chime suddenly rang in her mind: her grandmother’s fortune-telling skills had awakened.

A quick calculation showed wolves to the left, human traffickers to the right, and… a military compound up ahead?

“Niannian figured it out. There’s food in that direction.”

So the grubby little girl dodged wolf packs, outsmarted human traffickers, and predicted the path of a flash flood. On her tiny legs, she somehow made it into the toughest military compound in the province.

The sentry at the gate: ??? What’s this?

From then on, the entire military compound was turned upside down by this little lucky star who could tell fortunes.

She predicted that the grain in the warehouse had gone moldy, saving the whole battalion. She figured out the enemy’s ambush route during an exercise, stunning the staff officers. She pointed her little finger and said, “That uncle is a bad guy,” and sure enough, they caught a spy who’d infiltrated the compound.

One imposing commander grew more and more attached to her, slamming his hand on the table and roaring, “Who says she’s an orphan?! She’s clearly my long-lost daughter!”

Five regimental commanders stood up at the same time. “Why should she be yours? I saw her first!”

And when those awful relatives came calling, having heard the news and spouting all sorts of talk about “family bonds”

Jiang Niannian slowly counted on her fingers. “Niannian figured it out. They mean no good.”

Behind her, the soldiers of the entire military compound clenched their fists in unison.
