The Phoenix Returns to Its Nest: A Concubine-Born Daughter's Game of Power

On the surface, Shen Zhiyi is the neglected concubine-born daughter of the Shen family. In truth, she is the legitimate daughter, switched at birth because of a family secret. From childhood, she has witnessed the mystery surrounding her birth mother’s “illness and death,” and has trodden carefully through the household, quietly observing and learning about the different factions.

To uncover the truth behind her mother’s death and reclaim what is hers, she uses the family matriarch’s funeral to present herself as weak and set her first trap. From infighting in the inner household and commercial rivalries to court factional struggles, she moves among the various powers, turning their conflicts to her advantage and shifting the balance.

Along the way, she meets Wei Shao, a man whose identity is shrouded in mystery. They go from testing and using each other to fighting side by side, solving one cold case after another as they lead from the manor all the way to court. In the end, every clue points to an old case involving a change of emperor and the reshuffling of the great families. Shen Zhiyi and Wei Shao join forces to uncover the truth amid the maelstrom of power, completing her transformation from a “chess piece” into the one who moves the pieces.
