The Tide’s Message: Grandma Waited for You All Her Life

[Period Fiction + Love of Country and Family + Ensemble Cast + Chaoshan Culture + Overseas Chinese Letters on the Memory of the World Register + Red-Headscarved Women and Migration to Southeast Asia]

In the 1980s, a stack of undelivered “death letters,” sealed away at the bottom of an old camphorwood chest, revealed a shocking secret spanning half a century.

Forty years ago, he boarded a red-headed junk, leaving behind just one promise: “Once I’ve made my fortune, I’ll come back and marry you.”

Forty years later, she was a white-haired grandmother who still sat at the village entrance every day, watching the tides come and go.

She thought he had fallen out of love, married someone else in Southeast Asia, and returned home rich and successful.

She never knew that the yellowed overseas letters concealed three fingers he had lost, a bullet he had taken for his sworn brother, and a bloodstained love letter he was unable to send before he died.

From the blue-stone lanes of Chaoshan to the coolie lodgings of Chinatown in Singapore;

From the flames of the War of Resistance on the Yunnan-Burma Road to the wave of people searching for their roots after reform and opening up.

One overseas letter carries the joys and sorrows of three generations, recording the deepest love and pain of that era.

“The sea breeze blows over the red-headed junk. Grandma, I’ve brought your love letter home.”

Open this book and journey into a history that must not be forgotten, to understand the profound devotion etched into the bones of the older generation.
