I Put the Emperor on Trial Under Tang Law

Transmigrated into the Tang dynasty as a low-ranking court clerk, I was told from the start: In three days, I would put the emperor on trial.

I opened the Tang Code and Commentary. My hands were shaking, but I couldn't afford to say the wrong thing.

When Li Yan entered the side hall, everyone in it knelt. I didn't. My legs were too weak to bend.

"Your Majesty, I can't stand steadily. So don't sit down either. Let's hold the trial standing up, and neither of us gets an unfair advantage."

He stood up.

I thought I was there to put the emperor on trial. Halfway through, I realized that nine years ago, someone had sat in that very same side hall, written the final character, and been served a cup of poisoned tea.

That character was "wronged."

It was the character I hadn't finished writing.

I used the Tang Code to put the emperor on trial. In the end, the one on trial was myself, dead for nine years.
