Synopsis

Yuwen Shiji, the third son of Yuwen Shu, was famous in the capital as a “good-for-nothing.” He was no scholar and no warrior. In front of his two formidable elder brothers, he always kept his head down and wore a smile, never daring to drink even one cup too many. But no one knew that beneath this timid exterior lay a heart that saw all under heaven as a chessboard. When Emperor Yang of Sui sought a husband for his cherished daughter, Princess Nanyang, the young noblemen fought tooth and nail for her hand. Yuwen Shiji, however, shut himself away to “recuperate.” Three days later, he “happened” to rescue the princess’s maid from drowning in Qujiang Pond. Half a month after that, he “happened” to answer the hardest question posed before the emperor. On their wedding night, the princess asked him, “Do you love me?” He replied flawlessly, “I revere you, Princess, as I revere the sun and moon.” Yet as she turned away, he added, in words only the two of them could hear, “There are places the sun and moon cannot reach, but I will be there.” In the fourteenth year of Daye, a coup erupted in Jiangdu. Yuwen Huaji strangled Emperor Yang of Sui and slaughtered everyone in the palace. The court officials all perished with the emperor, except Yuwen Shiji. Three months earlier, he had requested a transfer to oversee the grain supplies, and “happened” not to be in the city. The princess drew her sword, ready to die for her country. He wrested it from her and knelt as she beat and bit him. “If you want to die, I’ll die with you. But not today.” As the troubled times surged like a tide, he became the shrewdest of peddlers. Outside Chang’an, he brought three great gifts to Li Yuan. Through three dynastic changes, he always stood beside the winner, earning the title Duke of Ying and rising to the pinnacle of power. The world called him a consummate opportunist, but he merely smiled as he made deals with tigers and danced with dragons. Yet no one had ever seen what lay in the deepest chamber of the Duke of Ying’s residence. There was no gold or silver, no secret documents, only a chest of a woman’s old belongings, locked away…

Looking for Historical Fiction with No System and No Excessive Invention

*My Grandfather Is Zhu Yuanzhang* is a great example. I like power-struggle stories, and all of Wu Laolang’s books are great, like *Three Kingdoms: A Good Kid*. No womanizers, and don’t give the female lead too much screen time. Absolutely no System stories, no wish-fulfillment stories, and no creator-type stories.

Recommend Great Historical Novels Set in the Qin, Han, Tang, Song, or Ming Dynasties

Historical novels with believable, well-written stories, where wars are bloody and peace is fraught with undercurrents. Male-oriented fiction, not the kind where ancient heroes are summoned.

Looking for Historical Sky Screen Fics That Keep Up With Current Events!

Stories featuring all kinds of historical songs, like “Five Thousand Years of Chinese History” (is that what it’s called? The rap song about history), or the student poetry recitation “What If Li Bai Had Never Existed,” which I just came across. A lot of stories like these use really old tropes.
