On the night his town was wiped out, his entire family was refined into souls.
Kong Bufan died outside the barrier. His mother knelt in the courtyard with a basin of water, looking back at him one last time. “Bufan, don’t come in.”
He didn’t listen.
His resentment tore open a crack. Carrying a drop of blood no one had ever seen, he crawled out of the pile of corpses and into the Main God’s Space.
The System scanned him. Four words appeared on his profile: Unknown Individual.
In the first instance, the butcher was so frightened by his resentment that he dropped his knife. In the second, the ferryman who took people across the sea searched his soul from top to bottom, yet couldn’t find a trace of the living in him. In the third, the old soldier guarding the bridge searched his chest and said, “You’re not carrying anything you shouldn’t. You are the thing that shouldn’t be carried.”
The System marked him as a bug.
The soul-refining family sent people to kill him. Each one who came, he devoured.
His resentment could devour other people’s souls. With every person he consumed, another fragment of their memories remained in his mind. It was noisy, but he endured it. He was looking for a chain, one whose links were engraved with the faces of his entire family.
His older brother, a soul refiner, came after him. He lay in wait at Kunlun Void for three months. He ate raw meat and slept beside traps. On the day they fought, the number on the detector jumped from 350 to 510, then exploded.
“You didn’t let your younger brother say what he wanted before he died. I won’t give you the chance either.”
Later, someone asked him, “You’re already dead. What are you fighting for?”
He didn’t answer.
The drop of blood within him was being consumed by his resentment. The day it ran out, he would be truly dead.
But before then...
He would tear the System apart and unlock that chain. He would take his family back.
As for the “Realm Lord” behind the System, the one who had been watching him all along...
He glanced up at the sky.
“Don’t just watch. Get down here.”
