People believe that the destruction of Kang Wang Wang Haiyang and Wang Tiyuan's forces in Guangdong marked the end of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom. Little do they know that Li Wencai, after fighting for eight years in the southwest, was defeated and broke through the encirclement. To escape the Qing army's pursuit, he led the remnants of the Taiping forces across the southern borderlands and into Laos. On this unfamiliar land, these soldiers of a fallen kingdom rallied once more beneath their tattered banners and established a new Taiping city-state in the wilderness of the south.
