The Lazy Woman by the Medicine Cabinet

That year, I was simmering yam and millet porridge outside my clinic. An old woman who had come to pick up her medicine asked me, “Is this porridge medicine too?” I said, “In the medicine cabinet, it’s an herb. On the stove, it’s food.”

Don’t be so quick to draw a line between medicine and meals. When your stomach is bloated, plain rice porridge gets there before the medicine. When counting calories has you pulling your hair out, pork belly does more good than vitamins. I’m no miracle doctor, just a lazy woman who likes to cook porridge beside the medicine cabinet. I also have a weakness for gossip and a bit of a temper.

This book doesn’t peddle miracle remedies. It’s about one thing: helping your body recognize what you put into it.
