War of Resistance: From a Routed Soldier and Cook to a Fearsome Regiment Commander

Songhu fell back, Nanjing was lost, and Xuzhou collapsed. Li Polu was conscripted in Henan. Over three years, he retreated three thousand li, going from rifleman to cook, then from cook to cannon fodder left behind by his company commander to cover the retreat.

When a Japanese bayonet plunged into his brother-in-arms’ shoulder, he cowered behind the stove, trembling. But this time, he didn’t run.

Because a voice had appeared in his mind:

“Battlefield Survival System activated. Current assessment: cannon fodder who could die at any moment.”

From chopping down the first Japanese soldier with a cleaver to gathering twelve rifles and forming his first unit; from an abandoned pawn cast aside by his superiors to the “Ghostly Menace” who made Japanese troops and puppet forces afraid to travel alone at night.

Li Polu doesn’t understand grand ideals of nation and family. He only knows this: anyone who treats him like cannon fodder will be the first to turn to ash.
