The Ming Dynasty's Greatest Child Whisperer

Overnight, Shen Mingtang transmigrated into the body of a newly purchased serving maid in a noble family’s mansion in the Ming Dynasty. The moment she opened her eyes, she was sent to look after the young heir, who had been crying for three days and three nights.

The midwife said he was possessed. The Taoist woman wanted to perform an exorcism. The imperial physician could only shake his head and sigh. The mistress of the house was in tears, and the stewardess was already preparing to have everyone who had tended to the child dragged out and beaten to death.

But Shen Mingtang heard the little bundle in the swaddling clothes crying his heart out:

“Hot! It’s prickly! I can’t breathe!”

“Bearded Daddy, stop holding me! My head’s about to fall off!”

“That perfume is choking me! I’m going to die!”

She quietly loosened his swaddling, changed his diaper, opened the windows for fresh air, and patted him gently to burp him.

A quarter of an hour later, the young heir who’d been crying for three days was fast asleep, sprawled out in every direction.

The roomful of nobles stared in shock.

Just as Shen Mingtang was breathing a sigh of relief, she heard the young heir mumble drowsily:

“Don’t let the one in green touch me. She has something bitter in her hand…”

From then on, Shen Mingtang relied on her ability to understand babies’ thoughts and thrived in the inner quarters of the Ming Dynasty.

The young master refuses milk? He isn’t frail, there’s something wrong with the wet nurse.

The young princess cries at night? She isn’t possessed, there’s something filthy hidden in her bedding.

The imperial grandson cries whenever he sees an attendant? Children can’t explain what happened, but they remember who hurt them.

Others said ancestral rules could never be changed. She said keeping the children alive was what mattered.

Others relied on power to make their way in the world. She relied on soothing, saving, and understanding babies, becoming the “Baby Whisperer” every noblewoman in the capital competed to invite.

From serving maid to exclusive nanny for the nobility, from a nursery to baby-supply shops, confinement centers, and childcare schools, Shen Mingtang turned diapers, swaddling, wet-nurse screening, and postpartum care into the Ming Dynasty’s most sought-after business.
