The book "The Shame of the City" is a collection of a series of expose articles published by Lincoln Stephens, a representative of the "Scoop Movement" around 1900. It truly records the corruption problems in six cities, including New York and Chicago, such as police bribery and the decline of citizen spirit. Also due to the rise of the "dung-picking movement" represented by the articles recorded in this book, Theodore Roosevelt stepped up the pace of cracking down on corruption and promoted reforms, thus starting the "Progressive Era" in the United States.
