The Li Family Dyehouse

In the fifty-eighth year of the Qianlong reign, at the Cui family's dyehouse in Tongxiang, Li Deming, a poor-born man who married into the family, endures one cold look after another. Yet with a pair of hands stained blue with indigo, beneath the moonlight at the hour between midnight and 1 a.m., he recreates “Moonlit White,” a dyeing technique lost for ages. Old Master Cui solemnly entrusts him with the family business, and Li Deming lays down three ironclad rules: better to burn a thousand taels' worth of materials than dye a single inch of cloth dishonestly.

From then on, the little dyehouse rides the tides of history, rising and falling time and again. Foreign cloth floods the market, wars rage, family rivalries take their toll, and enemies threaten from without. Over nearly two hundred years, six generations of the Li family dyehouse witness prosperity and decline, separation and reunion. Facing Japanese bayonets, the elderly Li Deming seals the dye vats with his own hands: “We will not dye a single inch of cloth for the Japanese.” In turbulent times, his descendants hide the ancestral “Integrity” cloth inside a wall, protecting the family's last shred of dignity.

From a small Jiangnan courtyard with gray roof tiles and brick walls, through the nation's peril amid the smoke of war, to renewal after reform and opening up, this blue printed cloth bears witness to the joys and sorrows of six generations. Today, the century-old dyehouse has become a local cultural landmark, silently telling its story: the simplest beliefs can endure through the longest stretches of time. The ancestral motto, “If the heart is not honest, the color will not be true,” remains engraved in the bones of every generation of the Li family.
