On a snowy night in Chunshan, Xu Zhichun once saved a young man covered in blood.
He said his name was Lu Jianshan. While recovering, he chopped wood, fetched water, and guarded her home. Before they parted, he promised her: once the war was over, he would take her to see the apricot blossoms covering the mountains.
Later, Xu Zhichun went to the capital to practice medicine, while Lu Jianshan became a young general famous throughout the borderlands.
They met again in the capital and stood side by side through storms, growing closer as they worked on cases involving medicine and military provisions. She safeguarded the supply lines for his medicine, and he shielded her from every danger. Though they were already so close, they always fell just short of saying what they truly felt.
Then the borderlands were attacked, and an isolated city was surrounded.
Xu Zhichun followed the medicine carts and military provisions all the way to find him, but Lu Jianshan stayed behind in the snowbound city, defending the realm with his own flesh and blood.
The apricot blossoms bloom every year in Chunshan.
But the man who promised to take her to see them never came back.
This is not a story about betrayal.
It is about two people who loved each other earnestly from beginning to end, only to lose to their country, to time, and to fate.
He defended the city. She kept her promise.
But though Chunshan can weather the spring breeze, it cannot carry her lifelong longing.
