Wen Liansheng is the best-known living bodhisattva in the capital.
A Guanyin mark between his brows, a three-part smile for everyone he meets, generosity with money, and a heart full of compassion.
Only his rivals know what a cold, black heart lies beneath that bodhisattva's facade.
For eighteen years, he has made himself into a perfect deception.
Until a jade pendant strikes him between the brows, and an evil spirit begins haunting his dreams.
Tentacles coil around his ankles. A realm of ghosts swallows reality.
The creature whispers in his ear, “Wen Liansheng, a lotus grows from the mud. Why pretend you're clean?”
Wen Liansheng tries everything to get rid of it: burning talismans, summoning Taoist priests, and praying to every god under heaven.
The ghost doesn't leave. Instead, it takes human form.
Black hair, red markings, and an unearthly beauty, like a lotus grown from hell.
It says its name is Guanzhi.
They fight in dreams and scheme against each other in the real world.
But for some reason, Guanzhi's gaze grows hotter and hotter.
Later, Wen Liansheng makes a pair of red earrings with his own hands. Kneeling in a dream, he smiles with a curl of his lips.
“Guanzhi, put these on, and you'll be mine (my dog).”
Guanzhi lowers its head and lets him put the earrings on.
The red shadows sway, like blood, or a wedding dress.
It, too, curls its lips into a smile.
“Fine. But think carefully. This chain won't be binding only me...”
Tentacles quietly coil around Wen Liansheng's ankles, tightening.
Later, everyone says that the young master of the Wen family truly is a bodhisattva, feeding himself to a ghost and earning boundless merit.
Only Wen Liansheng knows the truth.
He never wanted to feed a ghost.
He wanted to drag that ghost down to hell with him.
