An HR Director in the Ancient Imperial Palace

Lin Wan opens her eyes to find that she has gone from being an HR director with a monthly salary of 50,000 to a ninth-rank palace consort earning three taels of silver a month. The good news: the company (the imperial palace) is huge, the platform is great, and the boss (the emperor) is drop-dead gorgeous. The bad news: the KPI (imperial favor) reviews are brutal, every coworker (consort) is a drama queen, and the last-place penalty (banishment to the Cold Palace or execution) is very real. Lin Wan, who spent her previous life working herself to the bone, stares in shock. Thanks, but no thanks. She’s burned out and just wants to coast.

So while everyone else competes in music, chess, calligraphy, and painting, Lin Wan gives onboarding training to the new palace maids. While others scheme for a chance encounter with the emperor, Lin Wan helps the eunuch in charge optimize the personnel management process. While the empress tears her hair out over factional infighting, Lin Wan presents a “Palace Non-Compete Agreement and Confidentiality Clause,” recommending that the system be redesigned to prevent the loss of talent (favored consorts).

Everyone: ? Is something wrong with her?

Until…

She leaves a scheming favorite speechless by asking, “What are your career goals?”

She gets an arrogant noble consort to toe the line with a set of “Performance Reviews and Disciplinary Regulations.”

Even the lofty emperor begins to take a keen interest in this consort who doesn’t compete for his favor and only cares about “building her career.”

One day, the emperor corners her in the imperial garden, his gaze dark. “My beloved consort seems never to think of me at all?”

Lin Wan gives him a professional smile. “You’re joking, boss. You’re the core driver of the company’s growth. By the way, I have a few rough ideas for improving efficiency and cutting costs in the harem this year…”

The emperor: “…”

He only wants to fall in love, while she only wants to be his HR director.
