The protagonist, Ji Ming, practices Buddhism without compassion. He wields karma as a blade and karmic retribution as a flame. He does not believe the laws of heaven or reincarnation have an unalterable course. He believes only in the demon-subduing pestle in his hand and the wheel of cause and effect in his heart.
