Modern office worker Lu Yi dies unexpectedly and is bound to the “Die to Get a Refund System.” If she can successfully “get herself killed” in ancient times, she can return to the modern world and collect a hundred million yuan. She transmigrates into the despised, illegitimate “mad young lady” of the Zhenbei General's household in the Great Zhou Dynasty, and things are hellish from the start. The System assigns her the highest-difficulty “get yourself killed” target: assassinate Xiao Jue, the powerful, peerless martial arts master and chief villain who holds sway over the imperial court.
Xiao Jue is the Great Zhou's God of War, as well as the “Living King of Hell” whom the emperor and court officials fear. No one knows he has a bizarre System that makes him stronger whenever he is abused, but he can barely level up because nobody dares lay a finger on him. When Lu Yi, prepared to die, tries to drug and assassinate him in a laughably botched manner, Xiao Jue is stunned. Rubbing his face, which has been dusted with itching powder, he excitedly asks his System, “Is she in love with me at first sight and trying to get my attention in a special way?” The System replies, “...Based on data analysis, it's possible.”
And so begins an absurd farce in which they constantly misunderstand each other. Lu Yi racks her brains to “torture” the prince: she puts castor beans in his tea cakes, accidentally poisoning enemy spies in hiding; she sneaks in at midnight with a “weapon” (an embroidery needle) to assassinate him, only to stumble upon a mechanism and save Xiao Jue from a real poisoned arrow. Every “attempt to get herself killed” becomes ironclad proof that she risked her life to save him. Xiao Jue's “love-struck” System and his abuse-powered System both go into overdrive. The more he is “tortured” by Lu Yi, who is “obsessed” with him, the stronger he gets, and the stronger he gets, the more adorable he finds her.
Caught in a cycle of “repeatedly failing her missions” and “being forced to save the prince,” Lu Yi gradually falls apart. Yet as she spends time with Xiao Jue, she catches a glimpse of the sincere devotion with which this “villain” prince protects the land and its people.
