Luo Chuan, a once-popular screenwriter, is hit by a deep freeze in the film and television industry. He moves back to a small town with his daughter, who is in ninth grade.

At a parent-teacher meeting, he runs straight into Li Huishan, his daughter's twenty-five-year-old homeroom teacher and English teacher.

She's the school's most dazzling sweet-and-sassy teacher, bright and spirited, and unafraid to love or hate. Tired of the immaturity of men her own age, she falls for this gentle, principled older man with a lifetime of stories behind him.

He has been separated from his wife for fourteen years. When their daughter was a hundred days old, his wife's older sister brainwashed her into leaving for another city to start a direct-sales “business.” He raised their daughter on his own.

His talent has gathered dust. His heart is in turmoil, but the age gap, his hollow marriage, and his down-and-out circumstances hold him back, and his insecurity makes him retreat at every turn.

The post he shares only with her, “The Wutong Tree Poem Has No Ending,” is a confession on which she stakes everything, yet all she gets in return is silence.

With red-rimmed eyes, she demands, “I've practically begged you to love me like a beggar for love. How much longer are you going to keep retreating?”

He awkwardly tries to act young to win her over, but she sees right through him. “I love you as you are. Why pretend to be someone else?”

Society stands in their way, and her parents disapprove. This time, he won't let go of the summer light that belongs to him.
