On her first day inside the book, Lin Wan received a mission: stop Jiang Lin from falling into darkness and taking his own life. If she earned enough affection points, she could go home. If not, she would be stuck here forever.
He sat in the second-to-last row for three years.
Steamed buns filled with mushrooms and greens, an extra fried egg in his tomato-and-egg noodles, and a bottle of water replaced by the corner of her desk every day: all of it added up, and his affection score climbed from zero to one hundred.
When the System asked whether she wanted to go home, Jiang Lin was frying an egg in the kitchen. Oil sizzled in the pan, and the smell of scallions hitting the hot oil drifted through the crack in the door.
She said no.
Later, Jiang Lin changed his name to Lin Lin and took up photography, capturing one river after another. They traveled a long way and took countless photos. Each image always held a river, a tree, and a person. Lin Lin said Lin Wan had a place in every photo, because the viewfinder always left room for him.
Short version
I received a mission: stop a boy from jumping off a building.
Three years later, he stood by a river and raised his camera.
When he pointed the lens at me, I remembered
I came to save him, not to be remembered by him.
But it didn’t matter anymore.
I didn’t want to go home.
