The Starving Dead: A Pact of Life and Death Between Two Spirits

The Hungry Calamity: A Thousand-Mile Journey at the End of the Ming Dynasty, a brand-new fantasy version

When ferocious beasts meet spirit beasts, and enemies become one another’s refuge. This is not a story about saving the world. It is about two people in the apocalypse, fighting with everything they have to become each other’s light.

Chaos has arrived, and the Mandate of Heaven is running out.

In the eighth year of the Chongzhen reign, years of natural disasters leave the land strewn with corpses. Gao Yingxiang’s rebel banners sweep across the Central Plains, with Li Zicheng hidden behind him, following like a young dragon trailing an elder. Zhang Xianzhong vacillates in Gucheng, treating the court’s offer of amnesty like a joke. In Shengjing, Hong Taiji sharpens his blades. The Eight Banners’ cavalry has invaded through the passes five times, waiting only for Shanhai Pass to open of its own accord.

But the most terrifying thing is not the warfare.

It is the things awakening from the abyss.

Gods, demons, and strange beasts break free from their seals, not to save people or the world, but to fight over the last remnants of the Mandate of Heaven in the Central Plains. Giant monsters squat atop the mountains, inhaling and exhaling spiritual energy as the land fills with grieving cries. The newly dead rise as ghosts by the roadside, gathering in groups. And the heretics in Taoist robes are even more ruthless than demons and monsters, using the lives of entire villages and towns to pave a bloody path to ascension.

This is a world that devours people. People devour people, monsters devour people, ghosts devour people, and even Heaven is devouring people.

Yet even in the deepest darkness, someone still shines.

His name is Liang. A bandit with blood all over his hands, chosen as a sinner by an ancient ferocious beast. Her name is Mansui. An orphan who should hate him to the bone, with the soul of a thousand-year-old spirit beast sleeping inside her.

This is not a story about heroes or chivalrous warriors. It is about a bloodstained bandit and an orphan who should hate him, becoming each other’s reason to keep living in a world that devours people.
