Outpost Before Dawn

This is the true story of the reconnaissance company that served as the vanguard of the Battle of Tieling, a tale of comrades bound together in blood and flesh. Before dawn, they brought back strategic intelligence that turned the tide of the Battle of Tieling, then gave their lives to the land of Korea.

May 1951, Tieling, central Korean Peninsula. The main force of the Chinese People’s Volunteers was retreating along the entire front, while American mechanized units charged north, intent on cutting off their escape route. Commander Peng ordered the 63rd Army to hold Tieling for fifteen days. Twenty-four thousand men faced forty-seven thousand; the artillery ratio was one to five, and the tanks, zero to 180. This was a fight for survival destined to go down in history. But few knew that amid Tieling’s scorched earth, there was another force no one had heard of: the 189th Division’s reconnaissance company.

They didn’t hold positions; they went deep behind enemy lines. They didn’t rely on firepower; they relied on their wits. Disguised infiltrations, nighttime captures, directing artillery fire, intelligence analysis... These 120 scouts slipped into the gaps in a torrent of steel, using the most rudimentary techniques to fight the most modern war.

Thirteen days later, they were spent. Of the 120 men, only nine returned to their unit. Every report they brought back helped avert a crisis; every set of coordinates they marked summoned deadly artillery fire. The time they bought with their lives allowed the main force to withdraw safely and made the Battle of Tieling a miracle in the history of warfare.

This is the story of a group of unsung heroes. Their names are unknown, but their deeds live on with the land and its rivers.

Dawn is near. The blood-red sunrise will never fade.
