War of Resistance: Turning the Tables, This Company Commander Is Tough as Nails

[Battle-hardened commander] [Clever protagonist] [Rising military spirit] [Warlord-era turmoil]

Graduating from the sixth class of Whampoa Military Academy earned him nothing but an order sending him to the sticks.

With seven bullets in hand, Chen Hanqing walked into the Provisional Third Company, known as the “Beggars' Den.”

Six battered rifles, fifty-three soldiers waiting to die, four months of unpaid wages, and an acting company commander who'd been pocketing the pay of absent soldiers until he could barely stand.

On the first day, he took a gun from a corpse.

On the third day, he tore up the pay-exemption order and pointed his gun at the acting commander's chest. “Seven bullets. Is that enough?”

On the fifth day, he slapped four hundred and eighty silver dollars, one coin at a time, into each of his men's palms.

On the seventh day, he laid down a hard rule:

“No one in the Third Company gets on their knees!”

No food? Go take it. No guns? Go trade for them. No courage? He'd sit in the mud himself and spoon salt water into the mouths of dying, sick soldiers.

He could strip and reassemble a rifle in thirty seconds and came first in weighted cross-country runs. Even the toughest veteran finally admitted, “This company commander is different.”

Sun Debiao was still sending people to investigate his background, unaware that something far beyond this era was about to appear in the Third Company's woodshed.

Once these beggars were forged with a backbone of steel, Sun Debiao wouldn't be the only one to tremble.

This fractured land would shake at the rise of their company.
