The time Shang Xu descended to the mortal realm to undergo tribulation, a little jade rabbit saved him.

She fed him medicine. Held his hands to warm them. Kept watch all night. Pressed her forehead to his to check his temperature.

Burning with fever and barely conscious, he clutched the hem of her clothes, his voice rough as sandpaper. “Don’t go.”

She smiled and promised, “I won’t. I won’t.”

Later, he recovered. And she left.

She thought she had simply helped someone in passing.

He thought she was the only light in his life.

Back in Heaven, she told Chang’e the story as a funny little anecdote, then promptly forgot about it.

Until she rushed into the Hall of Divine Law. “Shang Xu! Were you the one who sent those people away?”

Beneath the moonlight, the god who had never shown emotion in ten thousand years crouched down.

His cold fingertips brushed her cheek.

His eyes were red.

“Yes.”

“When you were in the mortal realm, you only looked at me.”

“Now you look at everyone. What about me?”

He leaned closer, pressing his forehead against hers.

“You healed me. Then you didn’t want me anymore.”

“A Miao. Ten thousand years in Heaven can’t compare to those three months in the mortal realm, when you held me in your arms.”

Something hot fell onto her face.

“Tell me what to do.”

“Please, teach me.”

She froze completely.

He was too close. Close enough for their breaths to mingle, close enough for their noses to brush.

His hand rested at the nape of her neck without gripping, but his fingertips stroked her ever so gently.

As if making sure she was real.

As if afraid she would disappear again the next moment.
